New Decade, New World?

We are pleased to accounce this year's TOC Europe conference topics 'New Decade, New World?'

The events of the last 18 months have shaken fundamental assumptions about how the world works. As we begin to climb out of the ‘Great Recession’, the shape of recovery will lay critical foundations for global container trade in the new decade to come.

Understanding the pattern of recovery, the new economic, financial and regulatory climate, and how these will impact the business of container shipping, ports and terminals in a post-crisis world is the central focus of the 36th TOC conference in Europe, taking place for the first time in Valencia, Spain.

Tuesday 8 June

Executive sessions on Tuesday 8 June will revisit the business fundamentals for global container shipping and ports:

Which market sectors and trades offer the greatest opportunities as the recovery unfolds?
How will changes in global demand patterns influence future maritime container trade flows?
When will liner shipping recover – and will the industry ever look the same?
Prospects for the business of container terminal operations

The container terminal industry has largely weathered the downturn in better shape than its shipping industry customers. But does the industry underestimate the long-term impacts of the crisis in terms of capacity, volumes and the financial appeal of the business? This will be one of the central questions posed in a provocative panel on “The terminal business model: back to normal or the greater depression?”

Presented by Theo Notteboom of the Institute of Transport and Maritime Management Antwerp (ITMMA) at the University of Antwerp and Jean-Paul Rodrigue of the Department of Global Studies & Geography at Hofstra University, the session will explore the fundamentals of the economic and financial crisis and the impact on future expectations for the terminal industry.

The speakers will discuss likely business models and prospects as a consequence of the crisis, including the involvement of terminal operators in other segments of the logistics spectrum, M&A activity, and partnerships with shipping lines.

Wednesday 9 June

On Wednesday 9 June, the conference splits into multiple streams to drill down into specific markets and issues including:

BUSINESS TRENDS
Corporate social responsibility in ports and shipping
Finance and investment in the post-crisis world
Opportunities and risks in the logistics chain

MARKET TRENDS
 Mediterranean Basin
 Africa
 Middle East

OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY TRENDS
Strategies for coping with excess capacity
Squeezing the lemon – next steps in the drive for greater cost efficiency
No more silos? Integrating processes and information flows for reduced cost and competitive advantage
 Next generation automation strategies
 Asset procurement, management and maximization

To complete the picture, focused workshops and training sessions on the final morning provide the chance for marine terminal operators and suppliers to review practical issues in depth.

As the trusted forum for global ports and terminals to meet with their upstream customers, logistics chain partners and downstream suppliers, TOC Europe is a premier opportunity to take stock of new challenges, risks and opportunities for your business in the post-crisis world.
