Digitalisation at DP World’s European
Ports & Terminals

Que Tran, Vice-President, Technology and Transformation, DP World Europe

Digitalisation is reshaping the logistics industry, transforming the day-to-day operations of ports and terminals. Through the integration of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain, ports are increasing efficiency, adaptability, connectivity and becoming more environmentally conscious.

We are implementing these new technologies at DP World to increase capacity, by automating and streamlining operations to enable greater flow of trade and more efficient processes for our customers. Our 2023 Trade in Transition (TIT) report, led by Economist Impact and supported by DP World, found that 38% of companies surveyed in Europe are currently implementing similar IoT solutions to facilitate the tracking and monitoring of cargo. And another 34% are adopting digital platforms to enable direct business with customers or suppliers.

Technological Innovation

Smart technologies are driving digital transformation and streamlining operations. Cutting-edge innovations optimise cargo handling, reduce turnaround times and enhance overall productivity. While real-time data insights enable terminal operators to make informed decisions, allocate resources efficiently and mitigate operational bottlenecks.

Automation has the potential to transform the logistics industry, particularly in contract logistics, where advanced digital solutions are crucial for meeting evolving customer demands amid the rise of e-commerce and globalised supply chains. Technologies like warehouse automation, autonomous vehicles and data analytics are essential for streamlining processes, boosting efficiency and improving decision-making.

DP World Yarimca is a perfect example of this. Here we have integrated remote-controlled electrified cranes to increase port operation safety, as part of the 'Zero Tolerance' project. The quay cranes are equipped with sensors to prevent collisions and protect terminal employees, which has resulted in a reduction in lost time incidents by 50% since 2018.

Meanwhile, DP World Antwerp Gateway has introduced fingerprint scanning technology to improve container collection security. In collaboration with NxtPort, we have successfully tested the Certified Pick up (CPu) which pre-registers and vets truck drivers, allowing them to collect containers by matching their fingerprints to their specific container. To-date, almost 2,000 companies have registered interest in obtaining CPu.

Antwerp Gateway also has a smartphone app for truckers, Route 1700, through which they can consult the busiest hours at the terminal and schedule their appointment (to collect or drop off a container) at the most convenient time, ensuring smooth truck flow at the port.

Enhancing Connectivity

By enabling real-time communication and data sharing, digitalisation supports closer collaboration between shipping lines, hauliers, freight forwarders and port authorities.

At DP World we are using data-driven technology to build completely interconnected ports capable of facilitating global trade. Take Terminal Operating Systems (TOS), for example. Our CARGOES TOS+ solution creates a Digital Twin of a terminal, giving real-time insight into where cargo is in the terminal, its condition and foresees issues before they arise. CARGOES Ports and Terminals allows operators to automate the entire port ecosystem and improve efficiencies in all areas.

Embracing Sustainability

Digitalisation is also playing a crucial role in promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. Optimising energy usage, reducing emissions and embracing renewable energy sources means ports and terminals are not only meeting regulatory requirements but also contributing to a greener future for the planet.

By replacing fossil fuelled equipment with automated equipment powered by electricity, DP World was able to drastically cut CO2 emissions. We are using data-driven technology to enable leaner, more connected intermodality across the region through the multi-million Euro terminal expansion programme. By creating more transport routes that link to our terminals - many of which are through rail and barge instead of carbon-heavy trucking solutions - we are making greener operations and setting agility as the foundation of our services. In fact, we now offer rail or barge services at virtually all our European terminals, which allows us to provide better value services to our customers, helping them move goods efficiently while ensuring they meet their own carbon targets.

DP World Antwerp Gateway has cut carbon emissions by 51% since 2013, largely thanks to utilising electric vehicles and equipment. We reduced our absolute carbon emissions across all our Europe operations by 20% in 2022, compared to 2021.

Embracing technological advancements is not just an option but a necessity for contract logistics providers looking to remain competitive and agile in an increasingly digitalised and interconnected world.

If we can transform the capabilities of the world’s ports and terminals using digitalisation, we can create a strong basis for the broader value chain, helping trade and prosperity flow further while being more in tune with the impact we make every day. Making global trade smart, sustainable and secure.
